Archetypes In Brave New World

Genetically modified embryos, test tube babies, and designer babies may seem like far out ideas that are just written about in dystopian novels such as Brave New World. Aldous Huxley’s novel describes a society where all the babies are created and born in bottles. The babies’ genes are manipulated to make smart, good looking alphas all the way down to impaired, identical epsilons. That society believes that having these social distinctions is necessary for their civilization to be in harmony and not collapse. American society today may not be too far from these “radical” ideas. America and the world are starting to creep into the realm of Brave New World in tampering with human genetics to create the babies that society desires. In Brave …show more content…

As an article from Popular Science says, CRISPR is the method used “to remove genes from an early stage embryo” (Chodosh). Although there is still not a one hundred percent guarantee that the DNA or gene can be removed from all the cells, it is still a successful and promising technique. At first glance it might seem inhumane to take or manipulate genes, the article says that “…the most useful genes to edit would be those for serious genetic diseases” (Chodosh). In other words, this could save thousands of babies from being sick or disabled for the rest of their lives. However, having the ability to manipulate genes also lends the opportunity of changing DNA to create designer babies. Parents could not only dictate how smart or beautiful their child is, but also the gender. While China and other countries have dabbled in this area of genetic engineering, this is a new and controversial topic in America. The question of morals and whether it is right to change a child’s lineage is something that seriously needs to be considered. Is it acceptable to draw a line at DNA editing just for diseases? What about survivable diseases? Should those be treated? Pretty soon there will be more and more controversial, tough questions and that line will continue to be crossed. Before we know it, our society could be on the brink of making all babies handsome, intelligent and virtually identical. When originality …show more content…

There is no stopping the progress of science. Even if the American government rules against designer babies and genetic modifications, some other country in the world is going to try it. It is only a matter of time before it spreads to all society and becomes the normal. That is why as a free country, we need to stop this from taking control. Designer babies not only defy the laws of nature, but tamper with the babies’ future. When man tries to be a god he ultimately fails. Humans cannot see into the future, therefore tampering with genes and family trees is extremely risky and hurtful. Brave New World shows how something unrealistic like mass producing embryos can easily become a normal part of society. How easy could removing diseased DNA strings turn into poisoning certain baby demographics to create a balanced social group? Protecting babies’ rights is important. They have a right to be beautiful in their own unique way. More often than not, it is the strange or different people that impact society in a very positive way. They are the most creative, who can see things from different points of view, and solve the impossible problems. Designer babies should be irrelevant and nonexistent. Designer babies lead to a civilization where everyone is identical, not equal. That is how quickly America could turn into Brave New
