ECT, or electroconvulsive therapy, is a form of treatment for mental illness in which the brain is stimulated and a seizure is induced. The seizure is supposed to rearrange the chemistry of the brain, which ultimately increases the mood (Barnes, 2015). Thus, this is why it is often used to treat depression, after all other treatment methods have seized to produce results. Although there seems to be mostly negative stigma surrounding ECT, and there seems to be more cons to the treatment, there are just as many pros as there are cons to ECT (Vann, 2011).
