“Fracking” is a slang term that refers to hydraulic fracturing. Fracking refers to the procedure of creating fractures in rocks and rock formations by injecting fluid into cracks to force them further open, releasing oil and natural gas. The larger cracks allow more oil and gas to flow out of the formation and into the well, from which it can be extracted. Fracking has many pros, being that assessing the energy in the rocks less dependent on unstable countries such as Venezuela. Using the natural gas to heat our homes and power our houses burn fewer carbon emissions than coal. Along with pros, fracking also has a couple cons. Environmentalists fear the pumping of water, sand, and chemicals could reach and poison groundwater. Companies wouldn’t be required to report the chemicals or formulas used in the process. First, hydraulic fracturing is a booming business in Michigan due to the many pros fracking comes with. According to Source B, “Tapping those energy sources would make the United States less dependent, economically and politically, on unstable countries such as Venezuela and the Middle East...would also enable the West to be less dependent on Russian natural gas, which Vladimir Putin.. uses as a political lever.” Being less dependent on other countries means we save millions on energy sources and possibly even start profiting from fracking. Limiting Putin's leverage power, lowers the tensions between both countries, perhaps making the two countries allies once again.
