According to an article of Cable News Network, there has been, on average, one school shooting every week within the first few months of 2018 in the United States of America (USA) where someone was hurt or killed (Ahmed and Walker, 2018). This statistic is shocking and the deadly school shooting cases in the USA have triggered hot debates on gun control. School shooting survivors are speaking out on social media to demand more actions on gun control and calling for a stricter gun law. However, people are missing the point because the guns are not the reason why teens are killing people. Guns do not cause people to kill! People who are pro-gun-control argue that gun-control reduces violence and crimes but it has never been proven to be the case. Statistics show that the number of gun ownership has climbed to more than 50% since 1994 but the gun-related homicide rate has dropped by 49% over those same years (“After Las Vegas Shooting”, 2018). Besides, guns used in crimes are usually not legally registered. 65% of juvenile offenders tend to own three or more illegal weapons and firearms (“Illegal Guns Statistics”, 2017). Therefore, further gun-control will not stop these criminals who own illegal guns from committing more crimes. Furthermore, criminals will always find a way to commit crimes with or without guns. Guns are not the only weapon that hurt or kill people! Moreover, further gun-control will increase black market demand for illegal firearms which would lead to violence due to the turf wars between gun suppliers. There are more than 270 federal laws as well as countless state laws covering gun sales and gun ownership on the books (“After Las Vegas Shooting”, 2018). For example, Federal law blocks the sale of guns to people who are deemed a danger to society and patients involuntarily committed to mental institutions (Schuster, 2018). Besides, the amendment to the 1968 Gun Control Act requires holders of Federal Firearms License to conduct a background check before selling a firearm to citizen (Schuster, 2018). According to a study by the Department of Justice, the background check system has blocked over 3 million firearm sales to prohibited purchasers (“Gun Violence”, 2018).
