Bang! Bang! Is it an option for protection?

Paul, a five year old boy, filled with enthusiasm playing with a ball in his parents’ bedroom while his father is doing something in the garage. While having fun dribbling, the ball slipped through his hands and went under his parents’ bed. As he searched for his ball, he found a caliber 45 pistol wrapped with a shirt. Paul did not know what he just discovered is a firearm and thought of it as a toy. Paul quickly ran downstairs and handed the gun to his four year old brother when he accidentally pulled the trigger. The young boy accidentally shot and killed his brother who took a gunshot wound in the chest and was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.

In the statistical reports of the Philippine National Police, more than 80,000 people have died as a result of accidental shootings each year, 30,000 of the people committing suicide are using guns, and those guns are kept in their households are for protection purposes. A gun is a necessary instrument to enforce law and order, however, the positive effects of guns is not good enough to balance out its negative effects. Keeping a gun in a household comes with a great understanding of the risks it may cause and the great responsibility it requires. Political philosopher Adam Smith wrote in his book the Fifty Million Handguns, “guns don’t kill people, and people kill people”. In response to mass shootings rampant accidental shootings by children, gun violence, homicide, robbery and other crimes by use of guns the government has implemented laws restricting how people can purchase and carry guns. However, the effect of those laws has been notably diluted by a thriving black market or underground store for guns brought by gun smuggling syndicates. These guns are discovered to be diverted to crime offenders and much more are likely to cross the nation undetected.
A handgun that sells P 6,000 in legal firearm store might sell for only P 1,500 in the underground black market. This price drop encourages people to access guns and possesses one without any restriction and knowledge about proper use of guns. And these people buying them does not guarantee us that they would only use such lethal weapon for protection and not for felonious
