At this point, it’s undeniable: America has a problem. It’s been an issue for decades, and probably will continue to be. Death. Pain. Suffering. Blood. Violence. Suicides. Robberies. Shootings. Domestic violence. These are all facets of what is undoubtedly America’s most controversial topic: gun control. 1,624. That’s how many mass shootings have occurred in America in the past 1,870 days. That’s more than any other country on Earth. It doesn’t end there: gun homicide rates in America are 25.2 times higher in America than in other high-income countries. Now, America isn’t the most dangerous country. We aren’t in a civil war, and there is little political unrest. So, why do so many people die of guns? Not only are they simple, but they are also proven to decrease mass shootings and gun violence significantly. The federal government needs to require vendors to perform extensive background checks on anyone trying to purchase a gun. Between January 2009 and July 2013, there were half as many mass shootings in states that require background checks for all handgun sales as there were in states that do not, controlling for population size (CITE SOURCE). This evidence speaks for itself. The inverse relationship between background checks and gun violence is irrefutable. It all eludes to the same inevitable truth: we are better off with fewer guns. We must take this issue into our own hands. Congress and Senate are less likely to pass anti-gun laws, as dozens of politicians are receiving money from the NRA. The NRA is paying the top five senators alone more than 25 million USD. As longs as corporations like the NRA have money, our representatives will resist passing gun laws. Just has it has been in the past, it is now our job to stand up and fight for gun control. We cannot continue to only talk about gun laws just after a tragedy has occurred. If we want a safer tomorrow, it is vital that we act today.
