Illegal immigrants cost America “$346 billion annually. (Woolridge) This is a lot of money that could go towards other financial burdens the United States has. There are “12.5 million illegal immigrants in the United States.” (Raley) This number is in addition to those immigrants that entered our country the legal way. Responsible immigration reform is not about stopping all immigration. It is about making sure that everyone that enters our country has been vetted and are accounted for. This is a hot political issue and it is one that all Americans should be concerned about. Our country needs to come up with ways to reform our current immigration system. These emergency medical benefits alone cost Americans “2 billion dollars a year.” (Woolridge) It is true that some illegal immigrants do pay Social Security tax and never get to claim any of it, however they do not pay income tax which is how many states pay for their welfare service. (Greenly) The counterclaim states that immigrants help state economies more than they cost them. They use a study from North Carolina immigrants to backup their claim. The study claimed that “immigrants cost the state $60 million, but produced $9 billion in economic growth.
