Immigration Since the year 2000, 1,500,000 to 700,000 illegal immigrants and 1,000,000 to 600,000 legal immigrants on average enter the United States each year. This is evidence that immigration has become a growing problem in our country. However, there are many pros and cons to immigration. One of these benefits is that immigrants increase our economy by reducing labor shortages in low and high skilled markets. Immigrants are willing to work for less pay which is cheap labor for companies in which they can keep the economy functioning. Highly educated immigrants are a huge asset too because they contribute to innovation and technology--this is also known as “Brain Drain.” Lastly, immigration exposes Americans to cultural diversity which sparks new ideas, thinking, and educates Americans on other countries way of living. Along with pros of immigration there are cons. As said previously immigrants will work for little pay. This is a disadvantage to Americans because immigrants are taking over their jobs resulting in unemployment. Joe Arpaio is known for his outspoken stance against illegal immigration. He has been accused of many offenses such as unlawful discriminatory police conduct, unlawful enforcement of immigration laws, and many other offences. He often calls himself “America’s Toughest Sheriff” because he claims that he has arrested over 30,000 illegal immigrants in the year 2005. Joe Arpaio also humiliated immigrants by making them wear pink underwear and having his inmates live in tents if jails were full. Many people support him because they feel we need someone to crack down on illegal immigration and stop it. However, some people find it discriminatory against Latinos and other immigrants resulting in many to oppose and rally against
