Labor unions grew in popularity in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, with the advent of the industrial revolution, where a greater quantity of goods could be produced by factories in a lesser amount of time due to new advances in machinery. Labor union is the organization of workers who come together to achieve common goals. Unions came into picture in 18th century due to the imbalance in the rights of workers in regards to owners. Knights of Labor were the earliest large scale union in United States organized in 1869. They sought equal work for equal pay including blacks and women. This union peaked in 1880s but was soon replaced by American Federation of Labor.
Labor unions arose from the outcry of the working class after being subjected to borderline dehumanizing conditions of the workforce. Workers were treated as disposable waste capable of performing tasks and lacked the respect they deserved. There was a general disregard for the working man, woman, and child, and it was evident through their pay, working hours, unsafe working conditions, sexism, racism, or age. The history of unions in the early stages experienced many obstacles. Starting from local craft unions and forming into national unions to the creation of American Federation of Labor and the Committee for Industrial Organization and then to the merging between them. Unions are classified on four goals including: uplift which is concerned with social issues including education and labor management systems; revolutionary unions aim to overthrow the capitalist system and replacing it with worker control; business unionism which represents employees and their wages, hours, and terms of employment; predatory unionism happens when the goal to enhance itself is at the expense of its workers. For over 40 years unions have been growing less dominant and shrinking. Unions exist to provide employees with compensation and employee benefits, job security, and how the attitude of management relates. In America, many workers in the “Progressive Era” were experiencing more challenges than opportunities and were labor leaders came in with corresponding rights and wages. The wealthy elite having control of basically everything flourished during this time with their efficient modes of performance. Workers under the control of the wealthy elite were defeated with the lost of actual intelligence and unethical conditions. For labor leaders they persuade prosperous Americans by distrusting employers and to negotiate with them - the politicians - to pass their dominant values. With the workers ' frustration of their jobs, it only seems logical that labor unions would have been born.
Labor Unions were initiated in the United States in the mid-late 1800s. In 1935, The National Labor Relations Act was enacted by Congress, the act defined and defended the rights of the employment relationship. The act allowed employees the right to unionize and have the union represent them through collective bargaining. The act was seen as incompatible with democratic principles and “unionization was viewed as a means for public servants to coerce public officials into granting favorable employment terms given the workers’ control over the function of government” (Battaglio, 2017). Both private and public labor unions are similar because they both advocate on behalf of workers, however, they are governed by different laws in labor relations
