I believe that the minimum drinking age of 21 should be lowered to 19. "The U.S. is one of only seven nations in the entire world with a drinking age of 21. Most Western democracies allow their citizens to fight in wars, vote in elections and drink alcohol at age 18. " (Cary) If at that age of 18, you can make the decision of fighting for our country and voting on who our president will be, you should be able to chose if you want to drink responsibly or not.
The earlier a person starts smoking the harder it is to stop, and the chances for cancer increase. Doesn’t it make sense that the age for smoking should be raised as well, if they were truly worried about fatalities? By allowing 18 to 20 years old to drink in alcohol regulated environments under supervision, would decrease the amount of unsafe drinking activity. If an 18 to 20-year-old can drink in bars, restaurants, and any area that is licensed, then the alcohol consumption can be regulated and would not lead to binge drinking in uncontrolled environments.
The drinking age should not be changed to 18 due to a lack of maturity, the statistics and consequences of underage drinking while driving, and the effect alcohol has on the adolescent body. Being 18 means that you are only about halfway through being fully developed.(2) Tony Cox, host from NPR News, says, “That critical parts of the brain involved in decision-making are not fully developed until years later at age 25 or so. ”(3) Based on this information, teenagers decision making skills would lean toward seeing the positive side of drinking instead of the negative consequences. The drinking age should be 25, because at this age, people won’t fall under influence from their peers like it occurs with teens.(2)

There are many factors that go into the decision making of whether the drinking age should be lowered or not. Many different arguments take place but the main argument discussed is that at age eighteen, citizens are allowed to fight for their country but when they return from war, they are not allowed to have a drink with their friends. Others argue that the brain is not fully developed at age eighteen and the alcohol consumed can injure the brain. The question everyone is asking is, would lowering the drinking age be beneficial or cause more issues? Evidence has shown that by setting the drinking law age to twenty-one has actually been beneficial.
So researchers have come up with a close age to when your brain is fully developed witch is closer to 25, which is when you can rent a car. The legal age to drink is twenty-one but the brain can’t fully handle it till the age of twenty one, which could hurt the brain and ruin it. So why on earth should we lower the drinking age to eighteen, so by the time people get to the age of twenty-five it is going to be messed up cause they been drinking sense
The drinking age should be lowered to 18 because that is when one is considered an adult, implying the intake of alcohol between 21 year olds and 18 year olds does not differentiate. Raising the drinking age to 21 has done nothing but make young adults want to drink more alcohol. Teaching people to drink responsibly before turning 21 would greatly enhance public health. “Now, high school and college students view dangerous binge drinking as a rite of passage” (The New York Times). This is because they acknowledge that it is illegal, and feel the need to abuse that by breaking the law and drinking even more.

A lot people question whether the legal drinking age should be lowered, or remain at 21. Some may think it isn’t such a good idea, because of the lack of maturity, and others may think it a good idea, because some people are going to do it anyway. However there are many pros and cons of lowering the legal drinking age. One pro is that the actual age where a person is considered to be an adult is 18.

In the United States, The legal drinking age is 21, but in my research, I have found that it is actually allowed, under certain circumstances and situations, to people of even lower age. Though all 50 US states have set their minimum drinking age to 21, exceptions do exist on a state-by-state basis for consumption at home, under adult supervision, for medical necessity, and other reasons. In fact, all but 5 states, Alabama, Arkansas, Idaho, New Hampshire, and West Virginia, under age drinking is permitted. Parents are allowed to furnish alcohol to minors if they are under proper supervision.
The minimum drinking age should not be lowered because it would result in an increase of hazardous situations. There is a strong relationship between alcohol sale outlets and alcohol related problems in an area. More specifically the relationship between the outlet location and violence in that area. If the minimum drinking age were to drop to 18, the number of people going to bars or other alcohol outlets would increase. This leads to a boost in alcohol outlets, which is a negative sign for an area.

I disagree with this idea because 18 years old is too young and it will result in an increased high school dropout rate. Most high school seniors turn 18 before they graduate and if the drinking age was lowered, it would give seniors an easy opportunity to provide alcohol for their younger peers. For example, Andrew Plunk, an assistant professor of pediatrics at Eastern Virginia Medical School states, "The minimum legal drinking age changes how easy it is for a young person to get alcohol. In places where it was lowered to 18, it's likely that more high school students were able to get alcohol from their friends." A recent study shows that lowering the drinking age to 18 will actually increase high school dropout rates.
Why drinking age should be lowered? If one is considered an adult at age eighteen in most of the country, are they not allowed to purchase and legally consume alcohol? The minimum legal drinking age needs to be lowered, and not just for that reason. The amount of teenagers with drinking problems and alcoholism is far greater than in Europe, where drinking ages are far lower. Also, studies show that the current minimum age drinking laws have been ineffective to a high degree.
