The current unchecked reign of terror caused by the Mexican drug cartels are an immediate concern for our United States. Risks extend well beyond issues involving border control and other hot button issues. With Mexico currently being our 3rd largest trading partner in both imports and exports, there is an urgent need to handle this matter. The destabilization of Mexico is in no way shape or form beneficial or positive in terms of our own economic stability over the long term. I personally believe we have a moral obligation to make a viable effort to help our neighbors on the South get their country out of the grip of smugglers, thieves and killers. There has been steady escalation in the number of citizens being killed during this conflict, as well as growing dissatisfaction from the citizens of Mexico about how this problem is being handled.
The Mexican Drug Cartels are know for smuggling drugs, but are now far more than a one trick pony. Cartels also deal in illegal weapons trading, as well as the pirating of intellectual properties. Most recently cartels have begun to frequently engage in human trafficking of illegal immigrants, as well as illegal sex workers to the United States. From 2006 to 2008 we have sent the Mexican government approximately $6 Billion dollars of aid in military and police aid, as well as weaponry. Those estimates do not include the costs of training 16,000 Mexican Security Personnel over the same period of time. There has also been recent public reveal of the ‘Fast and Furious’ program that was under the umbrella of Project Gunrunner.
