The Pros And Cons Of Nuclear Power

Nuclear power an efficient way of creating electricity using controlled fission it already supply’s a large amount of electricity that helps power our homes and business, however, it has a fatal flaw the radioactive waste that is produced by nuclear power plants stay radioactive for an extremely long time and this is not good for the environment. I come to the argument is the power of our future going to be supplied by nuclear plants or should we look towards abandoning nuclear power. Over 30 countries operate nuclear power plants and most of them are in Europe Asia and north America.

Firstly, a reason to stop using nuclear power is that it is unsafe. We only need to look at the incidents in Chernobyl and Fukushima to see that nuclear power …show more content…

The Chernobyl incident was in 1986 and a lot has changed both safety wise and technologically and now plants are much less likely to melt down. Evidence of over 6 decades of using nuclear power has shown that it is a safe way of creating electricity there has only been 3 incidents in the history of nuclear power that have shown that it may be unsafe to use, in the case of storing nuclear waste new method of storing the waste such as covering the waste and storing it underground in areas that are not seismically active are making the changes of leakage much lower also new methods of recycling the waste and using it again in the fission process are starting to be …show more content…

Renewable energy would be made more attractive if subsidies supporting the nuclear energy industry were cut. Renewable energy does not create a dangerous waste product and is infinite. Renewables like solar panels and wind turbines can be quickly planned and built within a few years, however, nuclear plants take up to 10 years to be planned and built.

Opposing this idea is the fact that renewable energy sources are too unreliable they rely on sources like wind and the sun to generate electricity. Nuclear energy can provide energy no matter what and is much more environmentally friendly and less polluting than the alternatives of coal, oil and natural gases. We are starting to close down coal-fired plants and do not want to used shale gas so nuclear will be a key provider of energy.

We would be better off in a nuclear fee world as a civil nuclear energy program can lead to a nation attempting to create nuclear weapons for example. Iran says it needs nuclear power to guarantee its energy security and it may attempt to create nuclear weapons using uranium from the nuclear power plants that it wants. Do we really need more nations having the doomsday weapons that are nuclear
