Recovery Differs with Age
The performance level of a human has a crucial role on what they can achieve in life. Physical therapists are provided with the opportunity to make a difference in the quality of people’s lives and help them gain their maximum functional independence. When people age their body tends to ‘fall apart’ and unfortunately, not all ages will improve as good as the next. Despite the maturity level that comes with age, research proves that the youth finds physical therapy to be more effective.
Physical therapists work with others in the health care field to determine the right type of treatment needed, they are trained to evaluate individuals and regulate what type of care is needed to assist patients rehabilitate and gain mobility back into their lives. Too often there are many impairments to one’s health when age is a factor. Dutton says, “The incidence of chronic conditions has been shown to increase with advancing age and, because aging is often accompanied by a deterioration of general health, the geriatric population is especially vulnerable to loss of function and independence” (p.408.) Some of the most common impairments for the elderly are, impaired cognition, increased falls and functional decline, each of these effect they outcome of the therapy, which could cause readmission to a hospital setting or a negative outcome of the therapy. Many of these factors are associated with poor health and the dependency on medications. As individuals get older their body has a reverse effect to their health. Many health degenerating diseases include, but are not limited to: osteoporosis, arthritis, diabetes, and dementia; all of which can cause deterioration of one’s health and eventually can lead to loss of function and
