The education and college preparation that students receive is strongly determined by the students’ zip code that they live. For one thing, there are not enough public high school counselors in the United States (Johnson, 2015). Private high schools have roughly five times more counselors per student than public schools. Often school counselors do not even have enough formal training in order to give their students the information necessary for college acceptance. “ It's unlikely that the typical public school can offer the resources available at private schools like Cranbrook, where tuition is $30,200 a year” (Johnson, 2015, 1). Groups of minorities and people of poverty are often segregated into specific area, separated from people of a higher social and economical class. Many minorities are stuck in persistent poverty for their entire life and this is often passed down by the inequality their parents faced. Families living in poverty stricken neighborhoods have incredible disadvantages in almost every aspect of life. For one, most children living in areas of poverty do not receive an education that enables them to attend college and often students living in poverty will have to drop out of high school before graduating to work and help earn for their family. These people without high school degrees are severely limited in where they are able to find work and can often spend a majority of their life either working for minimum wage or even unemployed. For a single parent family working minimum wage, it would be close to impossible for them to send their children to a private school or even transport them to a school in a different neighborhood that would properly prepare them for college. Many families of poverty also suffer for food insecurity often having to send their children to school without food.
