There are four main elements of discourses that are used to understand the earth's ecosystem. Namely known as limits and survival, planetary boundaries and the Promethean discourse. Each approach has their own respective strengths and weaknesses that influence shaping environmental policies. In comparison to each other, each approach has its own arguments as to why it is a better approach, ultimately shaping the ecological debate over the limits of growth and development.
Firstly, limits and survival is a more radical approach to environmentalism. It focuses on the notion that resources are limited and once used are no longer available. For instance, natural resources such as fossil fuels and oil are not unlimited resources. The approach of limit and survivals strengths lie within its realistic and radical arguments. A strength of this approach is that it looks at the reality of global warming and modern days society's living and notes on realistic consequences that can and will be

This approach strips away the idea of ecosystems and limits to resources. Prometheans believe that there is an infinite supply of resources in the environment and that growth within the environment is unlimited. The main idea of Prometheans is that “resources are only sought and found as they are needed”(59). Meaning that if more resources are desired then they will be sought throughout environments and found. This is one of the major weaknesses of the Promethean discourse because it does not take a realistic approach into situations where resources may be sought but what if there comes a time where they cant be found. The capitalistic foundations of the Promethean approach define the ecosystems use and purpose is to serve and support mankind. Humans have full domain and hierarchy over the environment and have the intent to use and retract as much as pleased from the
