Back just a hundred years ago, during our grandparent’s era, the world was very different. In just a hundred years, our advancements of technology and knowledge of the world of medicine have grown exponentially higher. Consequently, so has humanity’s ability to destroy. As our society continually grows, more resources need to be exploited to support our ever growing population. As a result, our environment is constantly being strained which affects its delicate equilibrium. Chemistry is the basis of so much incredibly important topics in science and in society. Chemical composition of the atmosphere and basic chemical reactions, such as combustion and photochemical processes are vital links to the questions about public policy through the considerations of air and water quality. A debate of smog, air quality, and pollution guidelines opens up a wider analysis of the environmental, health, and economic effects of smog in a chemical context. A discussion of acid rain contextualizes the study of acids, bases, and leads to a consideration of coal burning as an energy source as a major cause, and the environmental technologies that can be used to reduce sulfur dioxide emissions. In this way, the chemistry content is linked directly to issues of immediate concern in the everyday lives of society. The Chemistry AP class serves as a connection to the chemical dispositions of actual concerns facing society today. The Economics AP class and Government and Politics AP class I enrolled in have a growing importance to accomplishing my goal. Economics play a significant role in policy making. The more the policy affects certain business or corporations, the more those businesses will try to disrupt or impede those policies. Understanding the relationship between needs of the corporations and the needs of the environment is crucial in finding a compromise that will satisfy the wishes of both sides.
