: In my opinion, standardized testing is beneficial but also flawed. I agree they’re non-discriminatory because the content is equivalent for all students, but teachers are “teaching to the test,” leaving out additional learning opportunities. From experience, I believe the tests are
Standardized testing has not improved education in America. Standardized tests have been issued in schools all across the nation for years now. Some people like them and some people don’t. They do not help the student learn more information than they would without the tests. The U.S. has dropped from 18th highest scores in schools in the world to be in the 30’s on almost all of the subjects on the test.
Standardized Testing While can be beneficial, standardized testing isn't improving American education. Standardized testing evaluates only the individual performance of a student instead of the overall growth of a student over the course of a year. In my opinion, Standardized testing is not enhancing education in America. Not all students who are smart and take in all the information test well. For instance, there are many people who simply do not perform well on tests.
According to the NewsToday article, “Standardized tests don’t accurately measure student learning and growth.” They also go on to say, “Unlike standardized tests, performance-based assessment allows students to choose how they show learning” (Long, Cindy). “Standardized Testing is Still Failing Students” (NEAToday 2023
Standardized testing is a way to determine the potential of the student and the academic achievement. The American students are ranked against others around the world, and the number that America is in is not encouraging. The tests are not fair, and their use is producing a narrow curriculum and this kind of tests only limits the chances of the nation to produce qualified professionals like innovators. Standardized testing does not help the American students because the tests do not give the true potential and the ability of the student. The tests are given to the students to determine how well they have prepared, but this does not portray the true potential of the students.
Even if the tests were unfair it would not be as much of a problem if the tests helped us at all. Despite the tests having been in place for over 50 years, their implementation has not increased America’s scores on an international level. But of course, some are going to disagree as people always do. Those who disagree say that the tests help to determine who will do well in college. An edited volume, Defending Standardized Testing, edited by Richard Phelps, was created on the basis that standardized tests have benefits for students and teachers.
Standardized tests have played a role in schools across America since the 1800’s, only dwindling citizens of their education and self esteem. Everything a child has learned seems to be measured within a few hours of filling in bubbles. Countless hours of no sleep wondering how to prepare for a test that there is simply no way to prepare for, this is what students undergo year after year. It is time to face reality and take a stand against standardized testing, these tests do not approve students’ achievements, cost too much money, decrease the health of students, and schools spend too much time preparing for them. Do not approve students achievements
The Controversy of Standardized Testing Students everywhere take standardized tests. However, are they truly beneficial to the students? Are these tests capable of showing what students can really do? Or, are they biased against the test-taker, making it harder to reach his or her goals? Is it fair to base a student’s intelligence on one simple test grade that that student might have had a disadvantage in?
Over the years, standardized test have become more heavily depended on within the school system. The perspective on this type of testing system is 50/50 when the public perceives its importance. The question is, do these test adequately judge a students ability academically. Also, do they strip teachers of their freedom to teach freely based on the fact they have to teach for the test. When it comes to education as we all know, standardized test dictate the curriculum in the school system (Classroom Assessments for a New Century; one teachers quest to move beyond the bubble test).
There are people that believe that standardized testing is beneficial for students and an effective way of evaluating the student’s performances as well as the performance of the educators. Other than hearing my parent’s share how they feel about standardized testing, I have honestly never heard the opinions of other people. Regarding the topic of public opinion, a man named Richard P. Phelps wrote a book titled, Defending Standardized Testing. This article is about the study of various polls about the beliefs people have regarding standardized testing over time. His findings show a majority of parents actually believe that these tests are beneficial and should be administered (Phelps, 2005).
In large it seems like there is a mountain of opinion and evidence against standardized testing suggesting that we did not and our children are not benefiting from this high-stake testing. The purpose of this study is to determine if we should just once and for all do away with the antiquated testing and move to a better more improved form of learning that is not based and limited to what is on these tests. When these tests first came into being in the early 1800s, they seemed to hold a place then to help further assist us in the growing need for education about the booming population. However it did not take long for these tests to be used for purposes it was not intended for. Even though we have advanced as a society we are still stuck in trying to revamp these tests to fit our modern needs
Standardized tests have been an integral component of the American educational system since the mid-1800s. The use of standardized tests went through the roof with the creation of the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) of 2002, which made it mandatory for all 50 states to hold annual standardized tests. Standardized tests are defined by W. James Popham, former president of the American Educational Research Association, as “any test that’s administered, scored, and interpreted in a standard, predetermined manner. These tests often consist of multiple choice questions which are able to be quickly scored by an automated test scoring machine. I do not believe that standardized tests are improving education in America because they are detrimental
Although the ultimate debate about Standardized Testing is on how the tests are used, whether they present reliable or unreliable evaluations of student learning, the public has many more question(Concepts). Are Standardized Tests fair to all students? Do the benefits outweigh the costs? While some experts, one being Latasha Gandy, Minnesota Program Director for Students for Education Reform, believes that Standardized tests are good for children, families and schools. Other experts, including those at FairTest, believe that standardized testing damages education.
School’s are using standardized testing for the wrong reason. “A standardized test is any examination that’s administered and scored in a predetermined, standard manner. There are two major kinds of standardized tests: aptitude tests and achievement tests” (Popham, 1999). The most common examples of aptitude tests are the SAT and the
As a student in high school did you ever feel like the standardized test are helping you or making you get in to a better college? Have you ever thought about how many hours students and teachers spend preparing for the standardized test? Many hours and studying are being put into those test but are they really effective and are the test doing the students good in life? Standardized tests are really just to effective, teachers and students spend too much time on them and it’s not doing the students any good, and even it’s not doing the teachers any good. Standardized tests in schools today in Ohio should be stopped because they are causing for teachers to be evaluated by the test results of how the students do on the tests, they are having the students more stressed about school and do they benefit you in colleges and university and do they really look at how well students do on them test.
