The Story of Tobacco in America is a book written by Joseph C. Robert, and published in 1949. The author provides great information for the reader by dividing the book into nine detailed chapters, from -The Discovery of “That Bewitching Vegetable”in 1492, to “The End of the Tobacco Road”, in 1948. Robert’s book shows the impact that tobacco had in establishing the early lives of American settlers and for the country as a whole. The tobacco plant has shaped the various events throughout American history, while still doing so to this very day. Roberts goal was to provide history to the reader on how tobacco has influenced man and it’s effects on political, economical, and social life of America.
After John Rolfe found out that tobacco brought a nice income he had planters start growing it. The only problem with growing tobacco is that it is a high maintenance crop so it had to be watched year round. Planters loved the income it brought it but they had trouble farming many acres by themselves. Planters simply needed help and having indentures was the perfect way to get the help from poor immigrants.
In the year 1600, tobacco spread all through the United States and in the nations around it. To the people in America, tobacco smoking was taken as a tradition which they all had adopted. By the year 1604, James I the king of England, opposed tobacco smoking, saying that it would cause wild behaviors to the people. By then, tobacco smoking had become a habit for most of the people in England and they begged to be allowed to continue doing it. In the year 1612, tobacco was planted not only to be consumed now but also as a cash crop.
The tobacco industry has reported spending 8.8 billion dollars a year on advertising that is 36 million dollars a day. Their revenue in return is 744 billion dollars. Eighty percent of their consumers live in low-income and middle-income families. Cigarettes are the most common tobacco product used today and contain 60 cancer causing agents. Cigars are looked at as the least harmful tobacco product, but even though cigars are not inhaled, it puts the smoker at risk for cancer in the oral cavity and on the lips. Surprisingly, cigars contain more tobacco than cigarettes.
