Torture is the practice of inflicting pain on someone as a punishment or to get information from. This method was mainly used during interrogations to force information out of someone. In 1948, it was prohibited by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. “Torture was readily identified as a human rights problem that belonged in the basic human rights standards developed after World War II” (“Human Rights History Torture). Now, most Americans support the act of torture under some circumstances: torture being justified against suspicious suspects or terrorists. There have been small studies to determine Americans point of view. The study consisted of Pew surveys given from 2004 to 2011 that showed more than half can justify torture (Bloche 1330). Over the years, the acceptance of torture has become more and more controversial that it is still debated today. …show more content…

The argument of whether or not torture is good or bad depends on whether or not it has worked when used in the past. For example, when President Barack Obama confirmed that torture occurred during the CIA’s past September 11 interrogation, criticized by a majority of the public, is unknown to the public if it was successful or not. Since torture is taboo and seen as morally wrong, it is necessary to keep a lot of information secret. Recently, President Donald Trump openly told of his plans to torture the suspected terrorist of the June 28 attack at Turkey’s Ataturk airport in Istanbul (Vlahos 34).
