The Tortuous Debate

The word torture is one that brings along a negative image. It means inflicting a severe amount of pain, either physical or mental. By allowing humanity to go back to its savage ways, doors will be open to whole new world of problems that will only take us backwards. This will include progress made in human rights, mental health, and the government itself. Therefore, torture should not be used on any grounds.

Torture should not be used in any circumstance whatsoever. One of many reasons would be because it is unconstitutional. By torturing another human being it obstructs his/her rights as a living and breathing human being. The Canadian Constitution states in section 12 under legal rights that, “Everyone has the right not to be subjected to any cruel and unusual treatment or punishment.”(Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, Section 12).Which means that every individual is given these rights to protect them from such barbaric acts such as torture. Torture could cause a lot of legal damage as well as physical and mental. Levin writes, “I am advocating torture as an acceptable measure for preventing future evils”(Levin 302). It will cause physical damage to the victim, which can end very badly if taken too far. Who will be the one doing these acts? The FBI? CSIS? Or the local police department? No matter who is the one responsible it will negatively affect any organization. Credibility, authority and Moral will be at question affecting the image of any institution. Any member of the police department, Military, or CSIS are required to take an oath to protect and serve the community as best as they can.
