There has been an ongoing controversy in the United States on whether the drinking age should be lowered to eighteen like most of the world or if it should stay at twenty-one. Underage drinking has been a major controversial issue for years, yet why is it not under control and why is the underage drinking problem still relevant? Teenagers are continuing to buy alcohol with fake IDs, get into bars, and drink illegally. There are a lot of factors that come together to why the drinking age should be lowered to eighteen;For one, The drinking age used to be eighteen, People can go into the military at the same age. the most obvious reason is too many people are drinking before they are twenty-one. “In America, eighteen-year-olds can vote, operate a motor vehicle, pay taxes, marry, become a legal guardian, own a gun, fight and die in a foreign country, and even become governor of the great state of Rhode Island” (Will Fulton 1). The moment a man turns eighteen he is eligible for the draft and he is able to be sent of to the military to fight for the U.S. If a man can fight a war he should be allowed to consume alcohol. Arguments are made that if you lower the age from 21, the dangers become more prevalent, with immaturity in sight and lack of knowledge of how to handle oneself. However if the dangers prevail for drinking under 21 the dangers are ten fold that of being in the military with the high chance of being sent off to fight and die. A benefit of having the drinking age at 18 is, that with the age being 21 the college scene sees a lot more secretive and unsafe drinking environments. College kids are forced to drink in secret causing a lot more binge drinking. If kids can drink at 18 there will be a much bigger spotlight on the bar scene where , kids would be better monitored and would be more inclined to socialize, the bar scene would also cut down the amount of alcohol consumed. Another argument, is the age is 18 in many other countries such as Germany and Ireland for example. As a society Americans can see that there haven't been many issues with the lowered age requirement.
