Growing up, I have had the opportunity to experience what life is like in a town where playing sports is the main form of entertainment and excitement. Due to sports being such a major asset of this small-scale town, shouldn’t it be organized and well put-together? Throughout my life, I have endured all of the pros and cons of each and every one of Yucca Valley sports, whether I happen to be playing, refereeing, or just watching. Within my own experiences, there were numerous flaws throughout the structure of the Yucca Valley youth basketball program. Based on my own experience, the referees usually have no prior involvement with officiating young children in the realm of development and learning. Due to the fact that the referees have minimal experience, the room for kids to understand their mistakes is slim, being that the refs aren’t teaching them the correct way to play. When people volunteer to referee youth basketball, they don’t take into account the expertise that needs to come with it, not just in the game itself, but the officiating side of it. The referees don’t receive enough training beforehand which can be noticed throughout the program through the lack of acceptable calls. When I started refereeing for this year's youth basketball, I received an unexpected text message asking if I’d be willing to help referee games, and the next day I was on the court officiating. Luckily, I know the game well enough considering I have been playing it my whole life, but without that I would have been clueless out there on the court. However, this can lead to unsafe situations where terrible calls can lead to kids getting hurt due to excessive roughness between the
