There is a theory called the Feminist Theory which is a theory on why men assault women. This theory has been revisited by Griet Vandermassen. It is stated within this theory that men are taught to dominate over women (2011). Those men are socialized to rule over women and act aggressively towards them to show their power. There is another theory that can but some reasoning behind sexual assault is talked about by Humphreys and Harold. That theory is the Rapist Psychopathology Theory. This theory talks about how the attacker has something mentally going wrong. This can be mental imbalances or even emotional disturbances. The mental imbalance is often times a hormonal imbalance of the male testosterone (1996).

There is a varied spectrum when comes to working with those affected or those that inflict the assault. In other words there is the victim side of working with sexual assault and the victimizer side when working with assault. When working with the victim a social worker spends a majority of time working on regaining trust and confidence within that individual who went through the assault or rape. This is a big task for a social worker because trusting outside people was once easy for this individual however, in majority of the cases these individuals were raped or assaulted by someone they knew and trusted. Trusting outside people again is a major hurdle that this individual and social worker need to work on overcoming. These individuals that the victims know that ultimately end up raping or assaulting them are previously known as an active member in society, they are business men, and very social. The social worker also gives these individuals resources. Social workers also evaluate the trauma endured by the individual that they are working with and give them the appropriate intensive therapy that is needed to help them get a point where they can lead productive lives again.
Even with all this work and intensive therapy some relationships can’t be salvaged. Relationships can be lost due to comments made by friends or family after the rape or assault that hinders the recovery process and make the victim feel bad again. For example a conservative friend or family member living in today’s modern society could make states about the individuals dress or how much they drank which they feel led to their loved one being assaulted or raped.
