Development of the Renaissance Era is discernible through shifts in the long-established power of the Catholic Church towards the prominence of the merchant class's influence, leading to changes in the traditional social structure. Before this time, the Feudal System was the present force that drove education, arts, and sciences. Under this system, nobles who had inherited wealth by being born into high social statuses and the Catholic Church sponsored individuals in these areas. When the merchant class gained power, this sponsorship transferred to wealthy private citizens usually without the strong affiliations of the Feudal System and the Catholic Church. As a result the works of arts and sciences produced in the Renaissance Era were unbound
The Renaissance was not only a time of recreation and enjoyment, but also a time filled with crime and brutality. People who were caught committing crimes were met with the law. In the Renaissance Era there were many strict laws, common crimes, and brutal punishments. Long before the Renaissance, government was based on feudalism, the idea of dividing society based on class. People earned a set wage for their class’ jobs. Children that were born into a family were the same class as their family. Also, thinking was deeply religious and even art and sculpture all were based on religious figures. However, humanists quashed this idea.
The Renaissance era was noted to be an era of discoveries, wealth and great fortune. Most of Italy’s cities became wealthy through trade accessed through waterways around the country. The wealth of these merchants clearly influenced as well as supported new artist, writers, and philosophers. Among these wealthy merchant families was the Medici Family, whose wealth was in banking. During the Middle Ages, the prevailing system of government was feudalism. Under feudalism, there was the use of a definite social structure. People were born into a social class and usually stayed in that class for the rest of their life. The three social classes were the nobility, clergy, and peasantry and each of these classes had different roles to perform in the society.
Social class played a key role in the Elizabethan Age; without social hierarchy society would have fallen apart, the people did not know of anything else other than the role of classes. Each class had different situations of life, some were wealthy and had nice homes while others were poor and living off of the streets. The class rankings were given to each individual by situations such as birth, fame, wealth, and known skills(“Elizabethan Era.”). One could only move up a class by the Queen's approval, obtaining sudden wealth, going into debt, losing your job, and many other specific conditions(“Elizabethan Era - The Lost Colony.”). For instance, marriage between two people from separate classes could alter social class and was often frowned upon.

While art is one of the main things that took a new form there was also a restructuring in economics, education, and a change with those in political positions. There has always been a family in power throughout all of history, and while those families in power did have certain control over some of the areas around them. There was no family that was ever in such full control like the Medici family. The Medici family is known as the “Godfathers of the Renaissance”.
