For the civil aristocracy, the preservation of rank played a crucial part in their everyday lives at court. Within the status-bound world of the court, the rise and fall of an aristocrat was inextricably linked to how rank was maintained and enhanced in front of others. According to Schalow (2007: 2): "The court aristocracy rarely had to concern itself with earning a living, with child rearing, or with domestic chores. This is not to say that courtiers had easy lives, however.
