Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, published in 1960, tells the story of a child's experiences living in Maycomb, Alabama during a time of racism and prejudge. The too intelligent for her own good narrator, Scout, takes her readers for a ride as she fights school bullies, plays with maycomb rumors and experiences the dirt behind mob mentality and a society in which the color of your skin means more than one's innocence.

In the novel, the symbol of the Mockingbird is quite an important part of the story and final plot, being brought up, most importantly, in 2 very important scenarios. The first instance is in chapter 10 when Addicus reminded Jem and Scout that “[Its] a sin to kill a mockingbird.”(Lee 103) and later in chapter 30, when Scout compares the mockingbird to Boo Radley and even comments that “it’d be sort of like shootin’ a mockingbird”(Lee 317). The introduction of this symbol in chapter 10, foreshadows the future conflicts and plots as again Atticus explains that mockingbirds are innocent and don't hurt us. Later in chapter 30, while the question of whether Boo Radley should be put on trial, Scout uses what she learned from Atticus, and argues that Boo is like a mockingbird, and innocent, making the reader feel empathy for the innocent Boo Radley.

To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee tells a story of how a trail can have an impact on families. Through the book, Harper Lee shows a lot of symbolism using the mockingbird. The mockingbird is used to show the innocence of some of the characters. Atticus is shown as a Mockingbird for helping Tom Robinson in the trial where is convicted of raping Mayella Ewell when he did not. Tom Robinson is seen as a mockingbird because he is innocent in the trial.
Atticus punished Jem for tearing up Mrs. Dubose's flowers by requiring him to read to Mrs. Dubose daily. Atticus was aware of her morphine dependency as well as her struggle to rid her body of the substance. Atticus knew that Mrs. Dubose was not always kind, but he expected his children to treat her with respect, regardless of the fact. Atticus displayed stewardship when Scout did not want to return to school, after the teacher told her she could not read at home.
Why did Atticus defend a black man? Justice and being given the chance of a fair trial. Atticus Finch believed that everyone, black or white should be given the chance, to be proven not guilty. Even though some people thought Atticus was wrong in defending Tom Robinson, Atticus knew it was right to defend Tom because he knew everyone deserved a fair trial.
In To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, the passage I analyzed was a short conversation between Atticus and Jack. This conversation is taking place just days before the controversial trial of Atticus defending a black man accused of rapeing a white woman. Knowing this trial is going to end in an unfortunate verdict, Jack is making sure Atticus wants to follow through with the trial. This passage highlights an important character in the book: Atticus.
Although Atticus got judged and got called a "nigger lover", he continued to believe in what he thought was right, which was standing up for an innocent member of Maycomb. Atticus symbolizes a mockingbird because even though all he had done was stand up for what he believed in, he was hated and judged by his own community. Atticus believes that "it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird".
Taking a Stand For Your Beliefs In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird, we see many times throughout the book that taking a stand shows real courage. One of these moments is when Atticus Finch takes the Tom Robinson case, where a black man is falsely accused of raping a white woman. now in their time no matter how much evidence says that the black man is innocent he will still be convicted and sent to jail so what will be the point of having a trial right? Well, the black man's lawyer:
The mockingbird within the text of the novel represents innocence as the birds are very innocent themselves and never aggravate anyone. In the novel Harper Lee first signifies the true importance of the mockingbird in chapter ten as it is displayed in a discussion between Atticus, Jem, and eventually Miss Maudie when Atticus asserts, " '... Remember it's a sin to kill a mockingbird.' That was the only time I ever heard Atticus say it was a sin to do something, and I asked Miss Maudie about it. ' Your father's right
Because the mockingbird is a symbol of innocence it is symbolic of the characters of Boo Radley, and Tom Robinson. Both are misunderstood and judged by the townspeople without really knowing them. Tom Robinson is killed violently due to being put in prison because
I know one person that I would call “ an Attacus” he was my seventh grade bible teacher, Mr. Andrianni. He reminds me of Atticus because of his defiance of what society deems acceptable in his own pursuit to become a more righteous man. Mr. A spoke out against other authorities in our lives and the lies they told us because they wanted to appear to be less controversial and uninformed. He also taught us that through the faults that he would bring to light we should still respect and obey those authorities unless complying would be a sin. Similarly, Atticus did not agree with the townspeople on their morals and he used those people as examples for his children to teach them right and wrong.
