They don’t realize that because of what they did, Margot wouldn’t be able to see the sun. Later on in the story, after they played in the sun, they
In Ray Bradbury’s All Summer In A Day Margot, a clear theme emerges as Margot is treated with isolation, prejudice and cruelty. The female protagonist has lived in a world of darkness and rain since her arrival on Venus nearly five years ago. Her peers treat her cruelly with disrespect and Margot is made isolated from her surroundings. Early on in the story, we find out that the sun only comes out once every seven years.
This shows how jealous they were that she remembered the sun and they didn’t so, they were willing to take this once every seven year chance from her that she desperately needed. Another example is when Margot was telling her sun poem to the class, they told her she was lying and teased her.
"” (Bradbury)” This quote clearly reveals the jealousy that is causing a rift between Margot and her classmates such as her experience and remembrance of Earth when she was 4. The reader can infer that they are feeling this way because they couldn’t experience the sun and play outdoors unlike Margot who was able to experience the sun for four years before moving to Venus, Prior to the short story, it can be natural to resent someone based on the things that they have and be jealous. In this situation the children want to be free of the rain and experience the sun's joy everyday on Earth. Unlike her they cannot move to Earth so they naturally begin to disrespect her and poorly treat her instead of understanding her differences and that her remembrance of the sun was not a specific option that was given to Margot in her previous years on Earth.
In both the story and the movie of “All Summer in a Day,” it is clearly shown that there is much jealousy that can be found through Margot. For example, this happens when, in both the movie and the story, the children are running out to the sun. The text states, "And the jungle burned with sunlight as the children, released from their spell, rushed out, yelling, into the springtime... And then-- In the midst of their running, one of the girls wailed.
One such of these is about Margot’s poem that she wrote the day before the rare solar event, which states, “I think the sun is a flower, that blooms for just one hour” in response to this, on of the boys within the classroom yells out on how Margot did not write this and she was faking it. The way that this connects to the theme is on the basis that because of the previous hatred for Margot and knowing that she is able to remember the sun makes him angry and mad at how he never got to experience the sun. The dictionary definition of “Jealous” is “Feeling or showing envy of someone or their achievements and advantages”, in this case, Margot has the advantage of the sun and her memories. The hatred and greed they have for her is strong enough for they to hurt Margot. After they finish having their one hour of pure joy they realize what they did to Margot, the pain she feels and felt, they finally see the truth and how much Margot is feeling and the only way for her to keep stable is to give herself constant reminders of the sun through speech and
Why should she have seen it multiple times while none of the kids could remember viewing it once? This is when the jealousy that was built up inside of the children took a new form. They couldn't cope with their emotions and acted upon their jealousy. They were driven to treat their peer, someone who wanted to see the sun more than anything, in a horrible manner. They hoped to enjoy the experience that obviously was important as it killed Margot to be distant from it.
. .’ ‘All a joke!’ said the boy, and seized her roughly. ‘Hey, everyone, let's put her in a closet before the teacher comes!’ (Bradbury)” This narration in this section of the story emphasizes the feeling of jealousy piling up between Margot’s classmates because they want to move back to earth to get a chance to see the sun just like Margot did.
Margot wrote a poem in class about the sun and all the other kids denied the fact that
But when the sun does come out for those mere two hours, they play and forget about Margot. But after the sun disappears, they remember, and guilt and shame overcome them. Bradbury leaves us with a cliffhanger, but we can infer that the kids apologize to her. Maybe some kids believed her, but did not want to admit it. But we are sure, that Margot will never be teased for this reason, as she was right all along.
This shows Margot's classmates were bullying her due to jealousy because they put her in a closet just so she could not see the sun, something she had been looking forward to doing. Also, her classmates were laughing at her because she said that the sun was going to come out that day and no one believed her, so that also led to her being put into the closet. In the text, it states, “‘You’re lying, you don’t remember!’ cried the children” (2). This proves Margot’s classmates were jealous of her and bullied her for it because they were saying mean things to her, such as she was lying. Also, they were bullying her because they did not believe she had seen the sun before due to her not being able to remember what it looked like.
”(pg.3) The evidence shows the reader that Margot still remembers what the sun was like and that the children don’t want to believe that she remembers what the sun is and what it looks like. This goes with the theme of conflict and jealousy because it shows the reader why the children were jealous of Margot. “‘Oh, but,’ Margot whispered, her eyes helpless. ‘But this is the day, the scientist predicted, they sat, they know, the sun…’ ‘All a joke!’
cried the children.¨ (30). This proves how all the other kids are jealous of Margo. Because Margo remembers what the sun looks like and her classmates don't, they call her a liar. Also The text states, “All a joke!” said the boy, and seized her roughly. “Hey, everyone, let’s put her in a closet before the teacher comes!”
In the story, the other kids were jealous of Margot seeing the sun, and because of this, it made the kids become mean, cruel, and selfish toward Margot. They only realize how mean they were and that what they did was wrong, at the end of the story. Ultimately, Ray Bradbury shows the readers why they should reflect on their actions in their own lives. Which will help the readers not let their jealousy turn them blind and selfish to other people. For all people, good or bad, this will shape their lives
