By Ray Bradbury The theme of the short story “All Summer in a Day” by Ray Bradbury is jealousy. There are many reasons for jealousy in the story but it is primarily caused because the main character in the story named Margot remembers the sun. The reason for this is because Margot had just moved to Venus from earth about 5 years ago. Therefore, the other children are jealous because Margot has seen the sun and they haven’t because the sun hasn’t been out in years on the planet Venus because it's always cloudy and raining. “It’s like a penny,” she said once, eyes closed. ‘No it’s not!’ the children cried. ‘It's like a fire,’ she said, ‘in the stove.’ ‘You’re lying, you don’t remember!’ cried the children.”(pg.3) The evidence shows the reader that Margot still remembers what the sun was like and that the children don’t want to believe that she remembers what the sun is and what it looks like. This goes with the theme of conflict and jealousy because it shows the reader why the children were jealous of Margot. “‘Oh, but,’ Margot whispered, her eyes helpless. ‘But this is the day, the scientist predicted, they sat, they know, the sun…’ ‘All a joke!’ said the boy, and sized her roughly. ‘Hey, everyone, let’s put her in a closet before the teacher comes!’ ‘No,’ said Margot, falling back.”(pg.3) This evidence shows that the children got to the point where they were really jealous of Margot and that they were mad so they abruptly wanted to throw Margot into the closet so she would somewhat pay for the “lies” she was telling. This evidence proves that the theme of jealousy in this story is being followed by the characters because of how they treat Margot for experiencing something they haven't but that Margot has.
