Roy T. Bennett once said,¨Jealousy is when you count someone else’s blessings instead of your own.¨ This quote connects to both ¨The Necklace¨ by Guy de Muapssant and ¨All Summer in Day¨ by Ray Bradbury. Both Madame Loisel from ¨The Necklace¨ and Margot´s classmates from ¨All Summer in a Day¨ show jealousy throughout the short stories. Madame Loiselwas jealous of everyone who was high class so she used almost all her money to buy something fancy to impress them. In the end though she is in debt and wasting her life trying to remake all that money. Margot´s classmates were jealous of her from seeing the sun more than they were. There jealousy caused them to continuously bully Margot but later regretting there actions. In the short story ¨The …show more content…
You can see this in the text of both ¨The Necklace¨ and ¨All Summer in a Day¨. From ¨The Necklace¨ The text states, ¨She had no clothes, no jewels, nothing. And these were the only things she loved; she felt that she was made for them. She had longed so eagerly to charm, to be desired, to be wildly attractive and sought after¨ (Maupassant 4). This shows that all Madame Loisel wanted was to be rich and pretty. Madame Loisel says that all she wanted was fancy clothes and jewels but she couldn't get that. Also from the text it states, ¨She suffered endlessly, feeling herself born for every delicacy and luxury. She suffered from the poorness of her house, from its mean wall, worn chairs, and ugly curtains,¨ (2). This shows how Madame Loisel thinks that she was supposed to be the one with all the luxury items. Instead she is stuck with a poor life and is jealous of all the other high class women. Similarly in ¨All Summer in a Day¨ the text states, “It’s like a penny,” she said once, eyes closed. “No it’s not!” the children cried. “It’s like a fire,” she said, “in the stove.” “You’re lying, you don’t remember!” cried the children.¨ (30). This proves how all the other kids are jealous of Margo. Because Margo remembers what the sun looks like and her classmates don't, they call her a liar. Also The text states, “All a joke!” said the boy, and seized her roughly. “Hey, everyone, let’s put her in a closet before the teacher comes!” “No,” said Margot, falling back. They surged about her, caught her up and bore her, protesting, and then pleading, and then crying, back into a tunnel, a room, a closet, where they slammed and locked the door." (40). This proves that the classmates' jealousy towards Margot caused them to lock her in the closet, preventing her from seeing the sun. Through both authors' use of symbolism the reader is able to understand how the characters are jealous and want
