In our current 21st century society community oriented policing is the main focal point of many department across the country. A model that is quite popular is the SARA model. SARA stand for, Scan, Analzyze, Respond, and Asses. According to the NJCA SARA…(2015), “is a common approach used by community policing agencies to identify and solve repeat crime and community problems” (P. 1). To give you an idea of how important community oriented policing is these days in 2015 President Obama put into an effect a 21st century policing report which had 6 pillars. One of these 6 focused solely on community oriented policing. According to the NJCA (2015), Scanning is used to identify a problem, Anazlyzing is used to identify the people or group involved or determine the cause, Responding involves a solution to the problem and Assessing is used to determine wether or not the solution(s) were effective. In my Crime Control Policies Class we were given a group project involving the SARA model. It was our job, as a group of 4, to choose a specific police department and a specific problem/crime then create a solution to prevent this from happening. Our group picked the Arizona State University Police Department and our problem was Binge Drinking on campus. A problem that quickly came to our attention was that its extremely difficult to control just how much alcohol someone consumes especially when it occurs in a place of residence. Just to refresh your memory the R in SARA stands for respond. My duty is to inform you on how I would create a solution to our problem of binge drinking on ASU campuses. The issue, like i previously discussed, is that binge drinking is extremely difficult to stop. Not only because it happens usually in homes or apartments but also because it’s not against the law. However binge drinking, while not illegal, can have extremely harmful consequences. According to MyDrinkware website (2015), Binge drinking can cause aggressive behavior, alcohol poisining, and memory loss. As I continued my research i came upon the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website. According to the Center for Diseases Control and Prevention (2014), it can also lead to increased chances of STD. While all these are important concerns the number one problem it can lead to is increased chances in car accidents…DUI. When people drink they don't act rationally and tend to do things they wouldn't normally do. Cutting down on binge drinking would be the key to decreasing these harmful proponents of this dangerous
