Abstract:
Creativity is all about making connections. It differs from the traditional concept of intelligence in that it emphasizes original ideas, new methods, and progressive thinking. It means using intelligence to think of ideas from alternative perspectives that, in turn, lead to new possibilities. One way that governments, corporations and individuals can become creative is by changing the way children are taught. Future generations will need to be taught to nurture creativity through out-of-the-box ideas and balancing subjects like STEM and the arts. One notable period includes the second industrial revolution in the 1880’s. This technological revolution gave rise to incredible economic and industrial growth through advancements in manufacturing and production technology. These advancements led to the increased adoption of railroad networks and telegraph lines which in turn connected the world. Even in times of struggle, such as the great depression in the 1930’s, when manufacturing, agricultural, and financial markets were all on the decline, innovation eventually pulled the country out of this difficult time. One of the most important periods of creativity and growth is the era we are currently living in. Starting in the 1990’s and continuing today, the tech boom and dot com era has seen the rise of knowledge like never before. Intelligence can simply be described at the ability to acquire and utilize knowledge, memorize concepts and then apply the results to similar problems. This is analytical thinking, something highly focused on throughout our education. Creativity is the ability to take these concepts you’ve learned and connect them through the discovery of new patterns.
