By using a positive tone and very descriptive writing, Downe is able to paint a pristine picture in the reader’s head of the heaven-like America he lives in. By describing the delicious foods presented to him by strangers, the endless brandy he can get for three half-pence, and butchers who deliver meat like modern-day pizza men, Downe presents a vibrant and beautiful image of America to his reader. Downe’s tone also helps with his connotation; Downe is also able to make England seem like truly horrible place. When comparing England to America, Downe uses words with negative connotation like “improper,” and “disgusting” to portray his homeland in a bad way. When contrasted with how Downe describes America, the reader feels like England is a horrible place where the poor and middle class are stomped upon by the rich.
In the persuasive letter to his wife, John Downe uses several rhetorical devices such as diction, hyperbole, and juxtaposition as well as several tones to convince her to emigrate to the United States. In the first paragraph, Downe uses diction and an inviting tone using words like ¨welcome¨ in order to describe what life in America is like. Downe uses long sentences to list examples of specific inexpensive items. He conveys America as a land bountiful in opportunity using the hyperbole
In Chaim Potok’s novel The Chosen, two boys of different Jewish sects become unlikely friends. Danny Saunders and Reuvan Malter first meet on a softball field, playing on opposing teams. Growing up in secular New York is not easy for a Hasidic Jew, but for Danny it proves challenging. His father has grand plans for Danny to follow in footsteps, to become a rabbi. Danny not only does not want the responsibility of being a leader of his people but he is still searching for what he himself believes.
The novel The Chosen, by Chaim Potok, shows the journey of two friends in a Brooklyn Hasidic community during and after the events of World War II. Danny is the son of Reb Saunders, the rebbe of a Hasidic congregation while Reuven is the son of Mr. Malter, an Orthodox Jew who has both scientific and religious views of the world. Reuven is raised by his father through honesty and respect, but Danny is brought up through silence and lack of connection. As Danny grows up, Reb Saunders refuses to talk to him, except during Talmud class, hoping that the silence will take care of Danny as the Reb would. Although this is the only form of silence Potok emphasizes, many of the characters relationships are also tested by silence.
Imagine this…you're living in a world where everything is normal, but there’s a twist: you're defined by a number. One signature that could possibly ruin your life, a chance at love or royalty. Well in The Selection by Kiera Cass, the protagonist, America is labeled by a number, where it describes her place in society. She joins a competition to either win Maxon's heart or the respect of the people while trying. This is a story about how America needs to let go of the past and run towards the future before it’s too late, maybe even having to trust her life with the one person that could ruin her, Maxon.
Jack Eskew Mrs.Brown Adv. Literature 15 December 2016 Chaim Potok Potok was born in New York City on February 17, 1929, to Polish-Jewish immigrants Benjamin Max Potok and Mollie Friedman Potok. His father had emigrated from Poland to the United States in 1921. Chaim Potok, along with his younger brother and two younger sisters, was raised in the Orthodox Jewish religion. In his literature, Chaim Potok uses his experiences growing up as an orthodox Jew during World War II, a time of segregation among the different Hasidic Jew sectors, where friendships from different groups were forbidden and loyalty to one’s own group was arduous.
The book I am reading is called The One. The page I am on is page 235/323. This book is about the final 4 girls trying to win the spot of the prince’s wife. So far America is in the lead and Maxon, the prince, really wants to marry her. But his father doesn’t even like her
In The Selection by Kiera Cass, America, a teenage girl realizes that the selection is not horrible after all. Initially, America is just a comely, ordinary teenage girl that is ranked a five. That ranking is quite good considering that royalty are ranked ones and hobos are ranked eights. America leads a fairly normal teenage life. She does however have to keep her love for Aspen a secret.

“For thirty five girls the selection is a chance of a lifetime. The opportunity to escape the life laid out for them since birth. To be swept up in a world of glittering gowns and priceless jewels. To live in a palace and compete for the heart of gorgeous Prince Maxon” (Cass BJ) This quote explains what the selection is all about.
Throughout history, multiple religions have budded heads, such as Christians and Muslims. In the book “The Chosen,” by Chaim Potok, the Hasidic and Modern Orthodox people conflict with each other because of their different views of belief. The religion itself doesn’t conflict, but the people of the different religions do. Hasidic and Modern Orthodox are the two sects of the main characters which were divided off from the four sects of Judaism, which are, Reconstructions, Reform, Conservative, and Orthodox. Both religions are “types” of Jews; both of these are stricter than the “average Jew,” but Hasidism’s are considered the extreme.
My book is called “The Selection” by Kiera Cass. In the book people are living in a dystopian world where war has brought rise to a kingdom named Illéa. The society is separated into different caste from an excellent lifestyle to a poor one. It begins from caste 1 which is royalty then, soldiers, teachers, farmers, musicians and artists, cleaners, factory workers to caste 8 which is homeless people. The main character, America Singer is in caste 5, which is musicians and artists.
The Selection is the chance of a lifetime for the 35 girls as it’s their chance to escape their given life and to expose themselves with priceless jewels, gowns and compete for the heart of the young gorgeous Prince – Prince Maxon. The book is written by an American writer of young-adult fiction, Kiera Cass. The book is an interesting one because not only it catches many attention but also the main character, America, and I have a lot of common as we both live a simple life and tend to prefer living it as how it is till the end. The Selection is a romance novel and the first book in The Selection Series, followed by The Elite, then The One.
Steinbeck portrays the american dream through motif and irony to show that chasing the american dream leads to poor judgement of reality. Steinbeck
