The “Outsiders” made me think about the rules that groups give us are strongly founded on what they see as defiance. It made me think that some rules are given within a group are not remotely necessary and that we as a society are to blame for what is deemed as “socially acceptable”. Deviants may not even be actually deviants but that’s what they are labeled by society because they think, what the deviant did was wrong, which could be made up by what society thinks is okay behavior. The relation to this reading and the sociology course shows how society controls us and how they consider we should act. It reminded me of how society tells us as women that showing off our body parts is deemed as trashy and not lady like, but men can do so without
A historical figure that has had an influence on me is Ishmael Beah. His story of a child at war is truly inspiring. He ran to save his life at such a young age and he was captured and “brain-washed” into the war in Sierra Leone during the nineties. From his memoir, A Long Way Gone he enlightened me that there is no right side to war, both sides of the war are destructive, both sides recruited children to fight and both forced recruits to do drugs that altered their way of thinking. In the memoir, UNICEF saves him from the war by bartering for the children and they saved as much children as they could.
The Blind Side is explored and defined through several different messages. Views on race are examined and thoroughly described through the sociological concepts; Minority group, racial minority group, prejudice, stereotypes and differential in power. Throughout the entire movie an example that was presented in a sociological perspective is minority group; Experiences systematic advantages and has visible identifying trait. In sociology, there are three theoretical perspectives; symbolic interactionism, functional analysis and conflict theory. The major point of symbolic interactionism is to use symbols to help understand how we as a society view the world, and how we communicate with one another. In functional analysis, the major point is to look at society as a whole, constructed of various parts, or groups, that all have their own function. Lastly, conflict theory is the opposite of functional analysis. In this perspective, society is viewed as different groups, each competing for power, or dominance.
Society has made an effect on every person, it could affect you positively or negatively. Mildred, Montag’s wife, in the book Fahrenheit 451, by Ray Bradbury, is not the world’s best wife. Society has brought her down to this level because the community does not want the civilians to be thinking for themselves. It is as if the generation is being controlled with what they are able to say, or even do. These people are not allowed to live their own lives because of the fact that the society doesn’t want them to do so.
The session involved a young person named Gabriel, his diagnosed with severe Autism spectrum disorder. Whilst observing Phoebe, during this session, she noticed that he was not interacting with any of the staff, he would just move around and do his own thing. Phoebe stated that Gabriel would have epileptic fits (Caldwell, 2007), these are seizures that they go through depending on the area of the brain affected (NHS 2014). Commemorating Gabriel’s movement and interactions, it conveyed that he struggles to communicate with the world, this is due to the words come in scrambles which impact the reality which he does not understand. He is the only student in the college that has an individual programme made for him.
After reading the passage I believe the culture that I had developed as a teenager is Microsystem. Which Describes the culture in which individuals live, including belief system, socioeconomic status, poverty, and ethnicity ( McWhirter et al, 2013). As Egyptian teenager, I grew up under lots of pressure such as low socioeconomic and gender discrimination, which had huge affect on my behavior. For example, gender roles in Egypt are largely associated with traditional Islamic family structures, where women's roles are closely tied to the home and men's roles tied to the public. Gender roles are based on assumed biological differences between sexes and can lead to dramatically different life experiences as well as opportunities and outcomes for individuals.
