“The Red Earth: A Vietnamese Memoir of Life on a Colonial Rubber Plantation” by Tran Tu Binh give the reader a close look into French ruled Indochina rubber plantation. The story takes place in Vietnam in the Phu Rieng plantation. This was one of twenty-five French rubber plantation which were all found a long a three hundred kilometer long area from the South China sea to Mekong River in Cambodia (Binh VII). Binh came village in the Ha-nam Province located in Red River delta in Northern Vietnam. Binh parents were very poor and his father would sell manure in village.
Most people don’t know much about what exactly happened in the Vietnam War. Should this war have even happened? Many Americans believe this war was unnecessary for the armed forces to participate in, especially because of the damage caused in WWII. Tim O'Brien's novel, The Things They carry, offers a collection of short stories in which each expresses the different Vietnam experiences. Every story in this novel was impressive for its own unique reason.
In A Viet Cong Memoir, we receive excellent first hands accounts of events that unfolded in Vietnam during the Vietnam War from the author of this autobiography: Truong Nhu Tang. Truong was Vietnamese at heart, growing up in Saigon, but he studied in Paris for a time where he met and learned from the future leader Ho Chi Minh. Truong was able to learn from Ho Chi Minh’s revolutionary ideas and gain a great political perspective of the conflicts arising in Vietnam during the war. His autobiography shows the readers the perspective of the average Vietnamese citizen (especially those involved with the NLF) and the attitudes towards war with the United States. In the book, Truong exclaims that although many people may say the Americans never lost on the battlefield in Vietnam — it is irrelevant.
More indirect resistance on behalf of the soldiers was seen through search and evade missions as US troops still followed orders to search for the Vietcong but when they found them instead of engaging in warfare tactics they would give them an informal greeting and not notify their commanding offices (Handout: Glossary for the American War). This gave the Vietcong an advantage during negotiations because it became apparent that the troops were no longer obeying the combat orders given to them by their superiors. Everyone has gone somewhere or seen something for a second time that they hadn’t before. In Tim O’Brien’s The Things They Carried “Field Trip” chapter it is sort of like Deja Vu- going somewhere that you’ve been before although not having the same experience with it. O’Brien wrote The Things They Carried to help readers get a taste of what it was like to fight in the Vietnam war and the aftermath of it. In the chapter "Field Trip", O'Brien uses imagery and compares the experience of returning to Vietnam between him and his daughter to show the significance that the war had on his life.
