Seeing adults exhibit any negative emotion has always made me profoundly uncomfortable. My family, in particular, has never been open to emotional expression. I could count on one hand each instance I’ve seen one of them cry. This could be attributed to the fact that the women in my family are raised to believe they should carry their burdens silently and avoid openly acknowledging personal issues, lest they are considered weak. My family's antiquated traditions, in turn, caused me to develop a phobia, of sorts, of seeing any adult show vulnerability or become emotional around others.
