The Success of Garrett Morgan As made evident in Tod Olson’s article “Into the Poison Cloud'', inventor Garrett Morgan saved millions of lives with his inventions. Born in Paris, Kentucky, Morgan moved to Ohio as a teen to help support his family and for better opportunities for himself. Morgan possesses the qualities in Makenzie Carro and Alessandra Potenza S article “6 Qualities of a Successful Inventor”. The qualities that contributed to Morgan’s success as an inventor were his desire to problem solve, his insatiable curiosity, and his resilience. Morgan’s way of seeing a problem and then automatically thinking how do I solve this problem is a big part of why he was such a successful inventor. He was able to keep trying after many failed attempts and until he got it and he had resilience to these things. The author describes, “Nearly all his potential customers were White, and many were reluctant to do business with a Black man. Morgan wasn’t about to let that stop him, though. To market his breathing device, he would have to get creative. He hired White salesmen and organized demonstrations of his invention around the country. Often, he went along, pretending to be an assistant” (15). This confirms he was reluctant and was not going to give up. He was going to make his product famous and he was not stopping until he was saving the lives of many different people. Compared to, this was not Morgan's only time he needed his resilience to help him through the hard time and people denying him of his product. The author explains, “Morgan had a gift he didn’t want to waste: insatiable curiosity. But with few opportunities in the South, he knew he would have to leave Kentucky if he wanted to work with his mind. So as a teen, he said goodbye to his family and headed north, to Ohio” (14). This demonstrates that Morgan knew he didn't have many opportunities in Kentucky So he moved to a place with more opportunities to help him and his product become a success.
