Ernest Hemingway’s fictional writing, The Sun Also Rises, describes a tragic relationship between two characters. The two characters that are in love with each other are Jake Barnes and Brett Ashley. The setting of the novel is in Paris, France, after World War I. This is perhaps fate that they are in the city of romance. The actions of the characters along with fate have forged a tragic relationship within The Sun Also Rises.
A tragic relationship is a classic case of Romeo and Juliet, where two individuals just can’t seem to be together due to fate or actions. Like Romeo and Juliet, Jake and Brett often confess their deep love for one another, but still are not meant to be. Brett is constantly catching the eye of other men, which bothers Jake. This can be seen when Jake becomes infuriated with Robert Cohn, Jake’s friend who has fallen for Brett. One might wonder which individual is being more practical, Jake wanting to live together or Brett saying that she would be toxic to Jake. I believe that Brett is being sensible because Jake could not bare all of the attention that Brett gets involuntary. Also, Jake would not be able to please Brett physically because of his war wound. Then there are people like me, who believe that fate leads lives but does not control one’s life. In the case of Jake and Brett’s tragic relationship, I believe fate is a factor. I believe that certain actions are why Brett is going to get married to Mike Campbell, but I think that fate brought Jake and Brett together. Jake was injured during the war and met Brett in the hospital, creating a long-lasting
