This week we discussed ‘“The Tempest” in the Wilderness: A Tale of Two Frontiers’ by Ronald Takaki. In this article, the author discusses the differences between savagery and civilization. The main argument in this argument is shown in the form of examples of how the Indians and Irish were simply harmless at first when discovering the New World, but quickly made into monsters by the English men. I’m sure we’ve all learned in history of John Smith’s description of how the Powhatans cared for the sick and dying English men.

In the Atlantic Ocean there is a remote island inhabited by its own native population but also a more recent population, all victims of political and Atlantic storms. Prospero and his daughter Miranda were exiled from Milan and the others ship wrecked from a tempest conjured up by Prospero's powers and his spirit, Ariel. They all have different views about the island, some see it as their prison, while others see it as beautiful. My question is, who should own this island?
Nate Searle P#1 11/8/16 Shakespeare lived hundreds of years ago why are we still using his words. Well he happens to be the best play writer even to this day. In his time, he wasn't actually the best he was down the list of play writes. We still use his words today, like the plays Romeo and Juliet and plays like that.

During the time of The Tempest, the world was evolving and had become much larger. The Tempest portrays colonialism primarily due to Prospero when he comes to Sycorax’s island and subdues her, rules the land and introduces his own culture on the people of the land. He has full control over everything on the island and makes Caliban works as his servant and calls him of a thing of darkness. Not only does Prospero dehumanise and view Caliban as a subhuman, but views him as inferior. This shows the coloniser’s attitudes looking down on the colonised people, whereby they use words such as knowledge, light, wisdom, to refer to the colonising people, opposed to the terms darkness and ignorance to describe the colonised.
Shakespeare’s The Tempest was written during the time when civilized nations were conquering other undeveloped nations and manipulating their native people and their natural resources. It was during that time that countries such as Great Britain, Portugal and Spain extended their rules to other countries such as Africa, Asia, and the Americas. When these conquering countries conquered other nations, they not only stamped their ownership over them, they also imposed their own culture on the natives. Imposing their culture, they taught the natives to speak the conquerors’ language and practice their culture.
Through the twentieth century Shakespeare, a well known Poet, Author, and story teller, has written lots of poetry, plays, as well as many stories during his life, and some of it is based on himself. It’s hard to understand what he’s saying in his stories, but if you break it down it makes much more sense than what you think. Shakespeare was amazing at making illusions in his poetry, and sometimes it seems so real when you actually understand it. Though where did all of these ideas come from, what inspired him to write the way he did? What gave him the inspiration to do what he did.
“[T]he baseless fabric of this vision”: The Education of Prospero In Shakespeare’s The Tempest, Prospero, deposed from his dukedom in Milan by his false and wicked brother, receives an opportunity to punish by means of his magic. He causes a violent storm, one of the many tempests of the play, to come upon the ship of them who have acted wicked against him.
Shakespeare is the famous author of many different plays and poems. He began his writing in the 1500’s, and moved on to theatrical work as well. According to Barnet, “ eighteen of his plays were published during his lifetime.” ( Barnet).
Ariel and Caliban are both the same and different in many ways. Their roles in the play “The Tempest”give off a big influence for the audience. They are both slaves of Prospero, but are treated very differently. When it comesto having Prospero’srespect Ariel wins with their relationship. They as well have their own personalities to differ as well.
“Is love a Political matter or is it truly love ?” In the “Tempest” by William Shakespeare a very obvious topic is the fact that Miranda and Ferdinand have love at 1st sight but for many it comes to speculation that are they really in love or is it a political thing. When Prospero finds out his daughter is in love with king Alonso son he soon finds a way for them to fall in love so they can get off the island and become royalty. To conclude with it is in a political stance.

As Prospero is controlling the storm, Miranda starts to freak out as she saw the ship in the storm and thought that many sailors have died. Prospero ensures that the storm did not actually kill anyone and the ship is still intact while hidden away in a secret harbor.
“A Tempest” is as a derivative of Shakespeare ’s play “The Tempest” by Aime Cesaire. Cesaire makes a number of alterations in his adaptation of Shakespeare’s “The Tempest”. These alterations have been made in order to outline the change in time eras between the two playwrights’ time of existence and to illustrate the great social change that occurred in these periods, mainly colonialism by the West, the subsequent theme of the quest for freedom as well as the theme of power that resonates throughout the play. This essay aims at exploring the similarities and to draw attention to the alterations made by Cesaire in “A Tempest” and the subsequent effects of these alterations on the audience.
