Within the past 208 years, the advancement of new computer based technologies have made drastic changes in the medical field, increasing sophistication of scientists, and the greater availability of external funding have been primary factors in the new discoveries. Nikola Tesla’s research lead him to discovering that from 26 miles away he could light up 200 light bulbs along with that it lead him to discovering the Tesla unit which is a unit of magnetic pressure(15 Interesting Facts About the History of Radiology and Radiography). The Tesla unit is within all the equipment used in radiology to find diseases. Therefore the history of radiation, what radiation is, the safety precautions, and how radiology cures diseases are important to the radiology …show more content…

Scientist say that there are cancer risks to any type of exposure to radiation and each year a human is exposed to 620 millirem, half of that is from man made materials and the other half comes from natural sources but, doctors disagree with scientist. Doctors do know that 620 millirems are exposed to a person annually but they don't believe that it is a risk of cancer because some radiation exposure does not have risks for cancer(National Cancer Institute). There are two categories of health effects that radiation can cause, chronic exposure and acute effect. Chronic exposure is being exposed to radiation over a long period of time. Acute effect is when large parts of the body is exposed to a large amount of radiation. Chronic exposure can cause cancer, benign tumor, and other genetic changes. Acute effect can cause cancer but it is a very rare(Radiation Health …show more content…

There are 13 subspecialty diagnoses that radiology has discovered and found cures for that are used regularly. For example breast imaging requires a mammogram, a breast MRI, and if it's extremely cevir a breast biopsy which is the only way to determine whether it is cancerous or not. Cardiovascular radiology requires a CT, X-Ray and an ultrasound MRI. It requires all tests to make sure the most important part of their body that keeps their blood circulating throughout their whole body is functioning well. Last but not least radiation oncology requires an outside x-ray source or radiotracers may be placed or injected into the body. There's so many more discoveries that radiology has made it
