Radiology Personal Statement

Studying biology furthers my ambition to work in radiology. My career choice branches from my love in anatomy. I am fascinated at the fact that we are able to see things that are not physically possible with the naked eye. In addition to this the function of the body and how we use it in our everyday life is one of the things that interests me the most about radiology. Another reason why I am eager to learn about radiology is due to my belief that, without radiology, doctors, surgeons, and other health care practitioners will have a harder time diagnosing patients’ illnesses and be able to come up with the best solution to cure it. At first I thought radiography was easy and didn’t require a lot of work. However after shadowing them, I found out that there’s more to it than just clicking buttons on the computer. I observed how they had to make sure of the patients safety by preparing them before performing the scans. I was also able to observed the difference between the different types of imaging technology in the hospital. I found out that CT scan are best suited for viewing bone injuries, the diagnosing of lung or chest problems and detecting cancers. Whereas MRI scans are more for examining soft tissues in ligaments, spinal cord injuries and brain tumours. I have also been told by the radiologist that CT scans are more commonly used then MRI as on average it only takes 5 minutes to perform whereas MRI takes 30 minutes. I have also found out that MRI does not use radiation and so it is much safer for us. Having undergone this experience I am convinced that I would thoroughly enjoy this career path, despite the difficulty , I believe that I will find it exciting and awarding. Not only that I believe that I have the skills to empathise with patients and have good interpersonal skills to help me deal with them. which I have seen is crucial in this
