In American street, the main character Fabiola relates to dealing with loss. This is because while traveling from Haiti to Detroit her mom could not pass and was deported. Fabiola now lives with her 3 cousins Chantel,Donna, and Pri. Fabiola also has a boyfriend Kasim and he dies from a gunshot. Fabiola has to deal with all of these losses. The theme of the story is “loss is part of life”. This is the theme because Fabiola goes through real life situations and it’s how life is. A loss Fabiola is dealing with is her mom. In the text it says “ My mother will be on the next plane, I tell myself over and over again.” This shows that Fabiola is worried about her mom and thinking she will meet her in Detroit, but really her mom is getting deported to a detention center. Fabiola has to deal with her mom being gone just because she is an immigrant. In the text there is a detective Stevens, she is trying to help Fabiola see her mom again and Fabiola is trying to do what she can to get her mom out of the detention center. …show more content…

In the text Donna, her cousin is in a domestic violence situation with her boyfriend, Dray. Fabiola has to deal with seeing her cousin Donna getting abused but does nothing about it. In the text it says “ “’Cause of Donna. She doesn’t just like him. She loves him. So it’s on you. This’ll really be for Donna,” Pri says.. This shows that Fabiola is trying to help Donna get out of her relationship with Dray but is refusing.
