The conflict of the story “The Fighter”, written by Walter Dean Myers, is that Billy Giles is having trouble with some things such as money issues. Billy Giles does not have a lot of money so he has to fight and box to get paid. His wife Johnnie Mae does not want him fighting so he has to keep the pride to stay in the fight without his wife finding out. In the beginning of the story the text states, “Billy Giles told his wife that he was going to the gym to work out. If he told her the truth, that he was going to fight again, he knew she would have cried” (27).
Book Analysis- The Devil in the White City The Chicago World’s Fair continues to be one of America’s defining moments. This is where America proved to the world they had grown up and were able to hold their own. Erik Larson eloquently illustrates the entire fair in little black words on paper. Although he was not alive during this event, Larson is able to reconstruct the story with factual events; he created twists to keep you ensnared into the story.
“You should have said, ‘I didn’t do it,” (Myers 138). In the novel, Monster—written by Walter Dean Myers—follows the life of a sixteen year old boy Steve Harmon who is a suspect of felony murder and robbery. Throughout the story, we see several journal entries from Harmon who reveals weakness through his words but not his actions. Clearly, if someone were to show weakness during adversity, there would be negative consequences in the future.
According to chapter five in “Cop in the Hood” written by Peter Moskos, he points out various reason how 911 is a joke and how calling 911 is not any help to the community. Whenever there is a drug incident in the community the patrol officers totally ignore the situation. And even if the patrol officer does address the situation the patrol officer never handle the drug dealers correctly. For instance, Moskos mentioned that a resident of the neighborhood saw three youth out on a late school night doing what seemed to be suspicious business on the corner and which lead the resident to call 911 on the youths. When 911 arrived at the scene, they instantly began to harass the three young men.
In the Chicago smog, H.H. Holmes lured hundreds of victims into his murder mansion, and killed them seemingly without motive or conscience. In The Devil in the White City, Erik Larson goes into a detailed description of the murders of H.H. Holmes and delves into what his motives might be. The motives of Holmes serial killings were pleasure and profit. Holmes would profit off murder by selling skeletons, life insurances fraud, and as a business strategy. After murdering Julia, Holmes got her skeleton articulated then, “[Holmes] promptly sold the skeleton to Hahneman Medical College… for many times the amount he had paid Chappell.”

The Chicago World’s Fair, also known as the World’s Columbian Exposition, was a world renowned fair hosted by the city of Chicago in 1893. The fair was hosted to glorify the legacy of explorer Christopher Columbus, as the world celebrated the four hundredth anniversary of his discovery of the New World. The events leading up to and during the fair are showcased in precise detail in Erik Larson’s bestseller The Devil in the White City, a nonfiction book written about the World’s Columbian Exposition. Early in the book, the idea to host a fair for Columbus is mentioned.
In The Devil in the White City Erik Larson told the stories of two brilliant men at the same time. One man was a nice, caring, hard-working, and a family man; the other was a deceitful, cheater, with a twisted appetite to murder young women and children. Burnham’s father wanted him to go to Harvard or Yale so bad had forced Burnham to study with a multitude of private tutors. Burnham had a severe anxiety disorder which made him so anxious he did not perform well on tests... therefore he never passed.
Death will always complement war. This is seen clearly in Tim O’Brien’s short story “The Man I Killed”. In this tale the Main character, Tim, is vividly describing in his mind the enemy Vietcong solider he just killed life story before his death. He details everything, from the visible wounds on the soldier’s body to a fantasy of the man’s life. Forced into Submission Brent Staples is living his life in constant worry and fear. Due to his tall and threatening appearance, people are often uncomfortable around him. And even though he means no harm, he leaves others terror-stricken. He could easily startle someone into attack mode. Resulting in him being forced into an obedient, unassertive lifestyle.
People change. People adapt to the situation at hand, whether it’s a good or bad change depends on the person. In The Road there is a post apocalyptic world and Cormac McCarthy wants to show many different types of these people, the good, the bad, the ugly. Throughout the book a man and his son try to survive the apocalypse, but in turn end up confronting some terrible persons. These people have become that way in order to survive in a dangerous and changing society.
In the bully a realistic fiction novel by Paul Langan, a high school student named Darrell Mercer that had recently moved from Philadelphia to California. In Philadelphia he had a friend named Mark he had fought all of his fights because Darrell was small and skinny kid. Then his mom found a better job in California. After they settled Darrell first day at school was really bad and he meet a bully that made his day really bad that he wish that he can move back. Langan used setting, characters, and plot to develop the theme of this novel.

Everyone was very frightened of him because he would make his classmates cry and be very upset. Little did they know he was getting bullied at home this might sound weird but it was actually true. When searching for authority, an individual may use fear or violence to gain the power of authority over others. They can use that power to instill more fear. Which in return creates more control over people who succumb to that instilment of fear amongst themselves in order to feel safe. The creation of fear through many things, including the unknown, change or Jack Merridew can create authority.
