To talk about the United States Army’s customs and courtesies I need to talk about the army culture and everything tied with it. They both go hand in hand in developing and sustaining professionalism and discipline within the organization. To start, What is esprit de corps? Esprit de corps is the winning spirit within the Army Profession, embedded in the culture, sustained by traditions and customs, which fosters cohesive and confident units with the courage to persevere. In short it is the spirit that fosters teamwork, cohesion, cooperation, and loyalty. All which are essential for the success of a units mission. The army values and traditions surpass that of our own government thus making the culture very important. Culture can be defined as shared attitudes, values, goals and practices that characterize the larger institution over time. A good example of culture is religion. Everyone in the United States come from different backgrounds and traditions. Some people grew up very religious which help guide them as they grow up and help establish the religions beliefs and morals. Others may have not grown up religious but the parents and the area they grew up helped established their beliefs.Like I said before the United States army is one on the longest lasting organizations in the country, it is only befitting that a culture be developed in its own ranks. Young adults volunteer to leave their families and homes because they respect what the army stands for and what it has fought for. The culture in an organization may seem like it changes do to the morale or the climate within. Climate is only how the people feel momentarily within the organization. Soldiers morale can get low and may affect the overall mission. Climate can never change the longer established set of standards that the culture built. It is information, beliefs, and customs handed down by word of mouth or by example from one generation to another. throughout the armies life it has developed many traditions that are still uphold with high standards. Ceremonies, drills and flag salutes are just a few a examples. Tradition in the civilian world are customs and beliefs handed down from generation to generation. The way you great people, holidays you celebrate even the religion you practice can be considered a tradition. Everyone within the United States Army understand and acknowledges the army way. For almost two and a half centuries the army has built a strong history of professionalism that give individuals pride in knowing they are a part of a great standing
