As previously discussed, technology can add to the youth population by helping youth culture members attain a “cool” status. Technology can also be helpful in creating or helping subcultures express their own identities. MTV is a TV channel (a form of mass media) that is broadcasted in Russia, the United States, and other countries worldwide. MTV was specifically designed to target the pop subculture. Mass media has been one source for different subcultures to pick and choose admirable styles, but in recent years, the youth culture as a whole has been shifting towards electronic media. Now, teens spend every waking moment relying on the internet for daily activities. Tim Berners-Lee was the creator of the internet; 1991 was when the internet started to boom and became available for the public to use. At first, the internet could only be used on desktop computers and was designed for the purpose of retrieving academic information, however, as technology improved, people were able to access the internet on multiple devices for a plethora of things (Bryant, 2011). There are two generations that are well involved in the internet era, “Generation Y” and “Generation Z”. The people that are part of Generation Y were boring during the years 1980-1996; this population grew up as the internet made its debut. On the other hand, individuals part of Generation Z were born between 1997 and 2018; most of these people, especially the younger half of Generation Z, are growing up with electronic devices that allow for easy access to the internet. With the internet, the youth use apps, play games, and watch videos starting at a young age.
