The annual Congressional Medal of Honor Society Convention was held in Boston this year during the week of September 14th. The American Civil War was an imperative and decisive series of battles that lead to the creation of resolutions regarding the conflict over slavery. Lee, commander of the Confederate army, and Colonel Joshua Chamberlain, colonel in the Union army. The strategic decisions and military positions reflect the personal attributes of these prevalent leaders, thus affirming their dexterity and personal emotions. It is MacArthur’s purpose to explain the phrase “Duty, Honor, Country.” He accomplishes this not by defining what each of the words mean, but rather illustrating what they do for the American soldier. MacArthur briefly lists three ways “Duty, Honor, Country” can aid soldiers in their mission, “They are your rallying points: to build courage when courage seems to fail; to regain faith when there seems little cause for faith; to create hope when hope becomes forlorn.” MacArthur expresses that “Duty, Honor, Country” is more than just a phrase, it is a driving force for the American soldier. In June of 2005 a team of four Navy Seals were tasked with a mission of locating a local taliban leader in the Hindu Kush mountains of Afghanistan. The four Seals were observing the village the taliban leader was believed to be hiding in when they were detected by three goat herders. The soldier in charge Lieutenant Murphy put it to a conference of his men whether to kill them to keep their cover or to let them go, Lieutenant Luttrell was the deciding vote of the group which determined the group would let them go. The decision resulted in ¾ of the Seals being killed and additional 16 american servicemen losing their lives due to a taliban ambush about an hour later(Operation Red Wings) . The moral decision although not obvious can be broken down into Kant’s Categorical imperative versus Consequentialism.
Marcus Luttrell in his book Lone Survivor, examines the true mental, physical, and spiritual strength of a Navy Seal. The Taliban killing and terrorizing innocent people is what the Navy Seals were attempting to stop, or in other words, attempting to make a society built around terrorism into a healthy democracy. An interesting aspect of the book is that Marcus comments on how his memory may not be 100% accurate due to the multiple wounds and concussions he received after throwing his body off of 70 foot cliffs. The reader therefore perceives the truth of the tale and of what the real life experience was like before, during, and after the fact. The story may not convey the exact truth, however, to Marcus that book is exactly how it happened, which is what adds to this piece of literature.
Because of this, I feel that we have a responsibility to be beyond reproach in areas of integrity, honor, and duty. Non-Commissioned Officers should always model and display the Army standard in their conduct, behavior, and appearance. I would find it a great honor to participate in the wreath laying ceremony at the tomb of the unknown soldiers. Both of my grandfathers served in the army, one as an army private during the vietnam war and the other served with the National Guard in the Red Arrow division. I think that the men and women who are in the army have perseverance and disciple. They are some of the most incredible people I know. It amazes me, how much these people love their country, that they would risk their lives for it.
When it comes to having and being able to maintain a strong moral code, front line patrol officers are the perfect example of what law enforcement requires. To ensure front line patrol officers maintain a strong moral code, they must be able to keep their integrity on and off duty. Officers should have this characteristic before they are hired and should be open for the police academy to repair and strengthen them. Law enforcement requires not only physical strength within the policing work field but also strength within one’s values and their ethical as well as moral beliefs. ‘’Values is the term given to those ideas, behaviors, and actions that are important to us.
