The book “A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier” is an autobiography about a boy named Ishmael who went through so much at a young age. This book should be read because it’s a story you could relate to and give you a perspective of how society is today than it was before and how it has affected people across the world. On the (front cover of the book) Carolyn See from the Washington Post says “Everyone in the world should read this book… We should read It to learn about the world and about what it means to be human.” She’s right, reading this book will provide you with facts you never known and could change the way you see things today.
Three decades of American policy in Vietnam had failed. According to Michael Lind, he concludes in his book, Vietnam: The Necessary War, “the United States may have won tactically in the Tet Offensive, but the excessive costs of winning badly by means of an ill-conceived attrition strategy in South Vietnam made a U.S. withdrawal as a result of domestic pressure inevitable.” The threat of Tet helped define and limit America’s international behavior.
First, this poem truly reflects the hardships the soldiers returning home had to face. In the poem the first lines state that the veteran sees himself in the wall. He feels he is within the wall himself because the war mentally killed him. He feels he should have his name on the wall because that’s where he feels he belongs.
A Long Way Gone is about a 12 year old boy soldier who struggles to overcome the Sierra Leone Civil War and get his normal life back after he enlists into the army because his village was starting to get attacked by the Revolutionary United Front (RUF) and that was the only way someone could survive. Due to being a child soldier, he was exposed to many bad situations for kids his age. One of those situations were drugs. When he was age 16, a group of men by the organization of UNICEF rescued some boys, whom one of them was Ishmael. Ishmael and the rest were taken to a rehabilitation center where they ended up causing a lot of trouble to the staff.

For my veteran interview we interviewed my Grandpa Jerry Herberholt. He enlisted into the Vietnam War in 1959 when he was only twenty two years old. During the time of his enlistment in the US was getting ready to send troops over to Vietnam so he felt it was best to get it out of the way with. He didn’t try to find an escape from the war. He felt as an American it was only right of him to serve his county.

The controversy over where free speech should be considered unacceptable continues on, even around the Vietnam War. In recent days, college students around the country have been adapting to the idea of having ordinary public “safe spaces.” Safe spaces are basically areas that people can go to, where their opinions won’t face challenges, ridicule, or criticism in any shape or form. This could easily compare to a more “official” way of plugging your ears to avoid someone’s opinion that you don’t find agreeable. As well as many people believing that safe spaces are childish and coddling, others add that safe spaces are also a restriction on everyone’s ability to speak freely, implying that safe spaces actually do become commonplace.
We just arrived home from Vietnam and I decided to write a diary entry about everything that happened and that we did. So to start with I have always sung and especially with my sisters Gail and Cynthia and my mum, my mum used to sing to us when we were little and she still does. I think I’m the best singer out of us so when my sisters were going to the pub talent show in town without me I was pretty cross, but I ended up finding a way there and joining them on stage half way through. The pub in town is where we meet Dave Lovelace who is the reason why we were able to go to Vietnam and sing, after we convinced him to take us to the audition in Melbourne. Mum didn’t seem very happy with the idea of me going to Melbourne little own Vietnam because I’m too young apparently and I had to look after my kid, so I couldn’t go, for the first few days that is.
What did you like about this script? I really liked the opening montage in this script. It was detailed, clean and it kept the narrative moving. I really liked that the script immediately pulls you into Trevor’s world as this pivotal moment in his life with his band.

Similarly, Alberto Rios, in The Vietnam Wall, brings us on his journey while viewing the Vietnam Wall, which serves as a symbol of America’s honor and those who died or remain missing from the Vietnam War.

Being social was something I used to struggle with. I felt awkward and thought I would never be comfortable around people. However, a trip to Vietnam with my father when I was 12 struck a change in me. Everywhere we went, people of all ages would stop me, just to talk. At first I was shy, but everyone was so friendly I found it easier and easier to spend some time and simply talk to people.
