By: Matthew Deres “When given the choice between being right or being kind, choose kind.” This quote perfectly represents the main character, Auggie Pullman, and the film Wonder. Auggie has Treacher Collins syndrome, and so he’s homeschooled, but in 5th grade his mom thinks it's time for him to try regular school. This film is mainly about Auggie overcoming the change of going to a normal school, and dealing with the judgment of other kids. The only thing that makes him feel accepted at his new school is kindness from others, which is shown through the characters, conflict, and plot in this film. To begin, an example of conflict that showed kindness, was the fight in the woods. On camp movie day, Auggie and Jack leave the class to go on a walk in the forest, when they encounter some 7th graders. Once they see Auggie’s face they immediately start calling him cruel names. The 7th graders were about to beat him up, when Amos, one of the kids that made fun of him earlier in the movie, came and helped fight the 7th graders off. This conflict made Amos gain respect for Auggie, and he showed kindness by sticking up for him. A secondary example that shows the theme is Julian’s relationship with Auggie. Julian was a bully from the start, calling Auggie names, and even bullying him into cutting his braid off. Eventually, he got sent to the principal's office and got suspended for two days. This is when he finally realized he was in the wrong, and told Mr. Tushman he was sorry. He became better at being kind, and was cheering and smiling when Auggie won the Henry Ward Beecher Award. This shows the theme because he changed from being a bully, to someone who was choosing to be kind. Ultimately, the conflict in this film clearly showed the
