In a model building at nine o'clock a.m., the four men used prison knives called “shivs” to knock out a custodial officer. Another officer named Henry Weinhold went to check on the custodial officer, but Weinhold also got knocked out by Boarman, Brest, Hamilton, and Hunter. The prisoners then jumped out of a thirty foot tall window into the water. Weinhold then was able to blow into the custodial officer's whistle. Guards sounded an alarm after they heard the whistle and then the guards started shooting at the four men. Harold M. Brest had to let go of an unconscious James Boarman when he tried to climb back up the window. Hunter swam until he reached a cave and he went in. First of all, some things we need to know are that all of these men were said to be dead after their escape. Evidence showed that some men did not make it across the bay. Theodore Cole and Ralph Roe were prisoners who escaped Alcatraz on December 16, 1937. Both of them had a history of crime even before they came to Alcatraz. Theodore Cole was serving a fifty year prison sentence in Alcatraz for a kidnapping in Oklahoma. Ralph Roe was serving a ninety-nine year sentence in Alcatraz for a bank robbery also in Oklahoma. Clint Eastwood played prisoner Frank Lee Morris who was the escape's founder. Frank Lee Morris and brothers John and Clarence Anglin's escape was on June 11, 1962. This escape was planned for many months and was debated by people as the greatest escape of all time. Frank Lee Morris became an orphan at the age of eleven. He had to go from one house to another until he became a teenager. He committed his first crime at just thirteen years old. He committed more crimes in his teenage years. His years after a teenager were mostly spent in prisons. Prison officials said he was very intelligent thanks to his many prison escapes. Morris also got help from John and Clarence Anglin. All three men were in Alcatraz in the first place for bank robbery. The brothers first met Frank Lee Morris at a federal penitentiary in Atlanta, Georgia. The Anglins were sent to Alcatraz after prison escapes of their own. The last man in the escape was Allen West. Allen West was serving his second term in the prison of Alcatraz. He had already known John Anglin from an earlier meeting in another prison. West had found many old saw blades in Alcatraz, so the escape plan was already taking
