1. Define the following and give an example of each of the following terms in a in a counseling situation. Do not copy the definition from the text, lecture or glossary and do not use examples from the text—apply your understanding of the information to an example for a counseling situation.
1. Empathic understanding is when a counselor becomes one with an individual. Being able to empathize with individual involves the counselor understanding what the individual is feeling without judgment. Empathy is an important component to spark a relationship between clients.
2. Unconditional positive regard is like unconditional love. You care for clients concerns and issues just because and not based on your own perception. Couples of same sex should be treated with the same respect as a heterosexual couple. We all have individual needs that need to be address.

Transference can be a way that clients convey certain feelings that they are not aware of onto the counselor. Clients may use the counselor as a bulls eye target to transmit feelings such as anger, harshness, romantic feelings, or rejections. A client may show romantic feelings toward his/her therapist when going through a divorce.
4. Anxiety is self-doubt that may or may not be developed by real life stressors. If not addressed correctly anxiety may leave an individual critical flawed. The rewarding part of anxiety is it can be treated. Cognitive behavioral therapy is known to help anxiety in clients.
5. Projection is a defense mechanism that is used by an individual to place certain traits of behavior that they experience that are offensive and unacceptable to other individuals. A manager who has poor leadership and is not organized may reprimand and accuse an employee
