Ray Bradbury was a writer who was born August 22, 1920, in Waukegan, Illinois. During his early childhood, the Great Depression was ongoing. During his career, his works earned him many awards including local and international awards. Ray Bradbury was able to write many stories and novels such as The Martian Chronicles and Fahrenheit 451. The Martian Chronicles is a collection of short stories; one of the most famous short stories from the Martian Chronicles was “There Will Come Soft Rains,” which takes place in a futuristic version of California. In this version of California, atomic bombs have destroyed everything except for a single house. The house is highly technologically advanced and can take care of itself. These ideas resulted from World War Two and the start of the Cold War. Ray Bradbury had a normal childhood. His parents were Esther and Leonard Bradbury, who got married on August 8, 1914. His father installed phone lines in people’s houses. His mother took care of him and his older brother. Ray Bradbury had twin older brothers, one named Leonard and one named Samuel. Leonard died when he was only two years old. When Ray Bradbury was fourteen years old, he and his family left Illinois and moved to Los Angeles, California. Ray Bradbury went to Los Angeles High School; there he participated in the Drama Club, where he decided he wanted to become an actor when he grew up. Five years after he graduated from high school, Ray Bradbury applied to the Military to fight in World War Two. However, he was denied due to his bad eyesight. After his rejection, Bradbury decided to become a full-time writer. After Ray Bradbury had finished high school, he applied for college, However Bradbury and his family were unable to afford college because of the lasting effects of The Great Depression.
